Letter to a Young Man in Prison

Dear [Name Removed],

It’s been a long time since I actually wrote a letter to someone. My correspondence is mostly email
these days. Email is usually hurried and very focused. I reply with a stated purpose and then move onto
whatever is next in my day. But with this letter, I’m not exactly sure where it’ll lead. I like that. I do
pray that these words, a combination of letters on paper, will somehow bring you hope and
encouragement. I pray that the Holy Spirit, who knows your heart, will use this letter to do his work.

Until last week, I didn’t know what was going on with you. I wondered what you were up to. I wish I could
have shielded you from it all. I wish I could have diverted your path to something nicer, brighter. But I
know I couldn’t have. I know I shouldn’t have. Your story is your story, and it includes some difficult
parts. The fact is, this season of your life won’t last forever. You will move on. You will get through
this. One day you’ll look back with faded memory and be able to recall only scattered details.

Your story will take a different turn. It will be built upon your current story. This is one of ways God is
so brilliant. When we follow Him, he turns our ugly story into glory. There might be crap floating in
our story, but he turns it into gold. But only if we let Him. It is sad when people are overcome by their
unfinished stories. They don’t see how hope can spring from the dust, how living water can flow from
the crooked crags. So they give up. They surrender because the light isn’t apparent.

Usually the light is just around the bend. But they don’t have the heart to walk it out. I pray you have
the heart. I pray you stay in this, this story that God is writing with you. I pray you follow God
relentlessly, stick close by Him. Don’t give up on the story that is forming. Don’t forget the light that is
dawning. It’s just around the bend.

I’m praying for you. Praying that you follow the One who made you, the One who holds
you now. Praying for the glorious story that is forming. Praying for sweet affections from the Heavenly
Father, for the salvation of the Son to be obvious, for the abiding fellowship of the Spirit. I’m praying
you stick close to God’s Word, judge all things by it, have the mind of Christ. I’m praying you have the
spirit of discernment and spiritual wisdom to understand God’s Will for you.

Write back.

Love,
Chris
