About the 40 Days of Prayer for PSU

40 days psu prayer

As the events unfolded at Penn State starting in November 2011, we believed God was saying important things.

The best hope for change is to agree with God by saying what He’s saying. The lion has fallen, and we are in free fall. But if we heed God’s words, a New Lion will arise in Lion Country.

With this goal, we created an email series called, “40 Days of Prayer for PSU.” It began as 30 days, but as it started, we felt like it deserved 40 days.

We prayed for the brokenhearted and the accused. We prayed for humility and self-reflection. We prayed for things to change.

For 40 days, subscribers received a daily email with a different prayer point, scripture, and short devotional.

The emails were based on, “The Lion Has Fallen: Four Things I Believe God Is Saying To Lion Country” and its prayer guide, “A New Lion Rising.” If you would like to pray the Bible verse in each email, here are some pointers on how to do that.

There are three supernatural results of saying what God is saying. The 40 Days of Prayer for PSU are part of a bigger story of what God is doing.

We partnered with Beyond the Silence, which is dedicated to telling the stories of the sexually abused and helping those in need.

100 responses to About the 40 Days of Prayer for PSU

  1. God bless the victims

  2. Thank you for standing up for what’s right. Do you remember Aaron’s grandson in the Bible, when he took the spear and threw it through the two individuals who were flaunting their sin. He received a blessing for keeping God’s standard of holiness. Your willingness to stand up to put God in the front line of this situation is encouraging.
    Thank you.

  3. the majority of people at Penn State are wonderful people and many of us are believers so I hold to the scripture, If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

  4. Pray against the moral demise of our country as well .. and to win our children and the next generation back to Christ.. thanks, have been praying for all involved in PSU. Let this be OUR wake up call for revival in this country! NO MORE !!!

  5. Thank you for doing this! It’s exactly what I need right now.

  6. Thank you for this resource. I’ve been feeling very frustrated by the scandal and conflicting articles that I’ve been reading.

  7. Please know this from the bottom of my heart…..working at Penn State has been a such a Blessing and still is!  But the “darkness” surrounding the campus, the conversation and mood of everyone is more than there are words to describe.  I hope there is a time of prayer for staff..we have received some emails, calls and now faxes from folks who just want to vent but are not nice.  As a believer I know there is a purpose and a plan so along with everyone else I will wait on the Lord!
Bless you for taking this endeavor on I know you will be Blessed!

  8. With the PSU community behind the horrific child abuse at Psu and throughout our land…I am praying that child abuse prevention becomes a huge part of our country. God does not allow things to happen for no reason. The millions of PSU supporters can make a huge impact on the cause to diminish Child abuse..

  9. the true light is already shining, Lord Jesus, we agree as One body, Your bride, and pray for repentance, truth, grace, holiness, and beauty from ashes in the centre region.

  10. I’m signed up, and hope thousands more join in.  A special word of appreciation for those who have left “negative” comments.  Your comments provide excellent insights into more areas and topics that require prayer and thoughtful discussion.  Whether or not you join us in prayer, we value you and your points of view.

  11. Where was your god while each child was being raped? Was he waiting for prayers before he intervened? Why did he ignore the children’s prayers for it to stop? What a puny god you have invented. Get off your knees and do something constructive.
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”- Epicurus

  12. Praise God!!!! Isn’t it just like God to take something broken and use it for good.
I believe God is using you in this situation and I’m grateful that you obeyed as he spoke to your heart.

  13. Thank you for doing this! We all need to find some peace.

  14. We pray for USA and Especially we do pray for Calvary Baptist Church members and Penn State in our daily prayer from ICTS Myanmar. Thanks for your prayer partner in prayer.

  15. Thanks for helping me remember to pray!

  16. thanks for offering this service.

  17. JoeSchmoe50, Are you this hard on Muslims and Jews and Buddhists and Hindus and every religion?  Or do you basically only have hatred for Christianity which seems to be the socially acceptable religion to hate.  It has no protection from the PC police gang.

Humans have free will.  Some choose to do good, others choose evil.  The questions you ask are difficult.  Having faith doesn’t mean having all the answers.

  18. God allows choice….  the whole free will thing for those who’e forgotten.
Sadly – for the boys – their was an abuser….
However, the way we all respond is also a choice….We now have a choice – to pursue repentance and restoration – or not.  None of that is marshmellow fluff. God bless someone with the courage and conviction to say so.

  19. One can argue that God already has acted sufficiently in this dreadful situation by assuring the ouster of the people who caused it and their enablers. One can also argue that a group of self-appointed “healers” is trying to hijack a dreadful situation for its own benefit, using a terrible time to put itself on the radar where flyspecks are generally and rightly ignored. But don’t worry. You have plausible deniability.

  20. Chris, as I was praying this morning thru the email you sent out, I opened my devotional for the day My Utmost For his Highest and today’s scripture reference is “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed —John 8:36”….what a verse to begin Day 1 on with praying for the brokenhearted! It is the Son’s desire and pleasure to set each one of us free from whatever brokenheart we have and yes, probably 99% of all Americans have a broken heart in some form or fashion which keeps that part(s) of our heart from the Lord…If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed….is exactly what His death did, made us free and we are free indeed!!
Thank you for your obedience to the call of God! Praying for you, for protection, for strength, for continued and even more boldness and an even greater depth of knowing Poppa’s love for you!

  21. CS Heinz, thanks for taking the time to seek after your God and share what you feel is on his heart. This world needs more people like you, who care beyond their own walls…bless you!

  22. We pray for the victims and we pray for Joe and the others involved in this despicable series of events.

  23. To God be the glory. May many souls come to know Him thru these tragic events.

  24. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with PSU and everyone affected by this terrible situation. With God’s help, I know that a new Lion inspired and directed by Him will arise. We are Still Penn State.

  25. There are many different ways to take steps of healing in our community.  Take steps to toughen child reporting laws, donate to organizations that help the abused, volunteer at a shelter for abused families.  Pray. We need it all, so find something that you can believe in and work to make a change. Our community needs all the help it can get.

  26. I heard about your 30 days of prayer on WTLR and your interview on WTLR.

  27. I am a Chtist follower and alum of Penn State. I have always believed Joe to be an honorable man. We all makes bad calls at sometime in our lives. I want to be a prayer warrior for the chldren and JoePa. cindy walthour ‘69

  28. You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20.3)

    I desire to have no other gods before You, Lord Jesus;
You are my Lord and my Saviour,
You are my Saviour and my Refuge,
You are my Refuge and my Strength,
You are my Strength and my Joy,
You are my Joy and my Strong Tower,
You are my Strong Tower and my Sanctuary,
You are my Salvation and my Sanctuary,
You are my Sanctuary and my Secret Place…
Will You hide me, O God?
O Abba! Father, I am afraid that I cannot,
That I do not know how to love You as I ought,
Yet I desire to love You as You desire me to love You…
Please show me Your Way, Your Truth, and Your Life,
    Lord Jesus,
    Please show me You.
I want to love You Alone as my One and Only First Love,
As my One and Only Lord and Saviour,
As my One and Only Joy,
As my One and Only Resting Place…
    Be my Sanctuary, Lord Jesus…
    Call me into You
For I want to look into Your eyes deepy
    And never look away.
I never want to see anything else but the depth of
Your heart in the depth of Your eyes,
As I see Your True Love for me
As You look back at me.
    Show me myself, O Lord,
    and make me like You.
For only in being transformed into Your holiness
Can I love You as You desire
And only in that way can I throw away my idols
And truly make You my All.
    This is my desire.
    You are my Desire.
    Jesus.
    Amen.

  29. Have been praying for all. I”m trusting God in all of this!

  30. Praying for the many victims of sexual abuse at Penn State and elsewhere. May God bless all those affected as the healing process begins.

  31. Have been praying for all the past weeks.

  32. i just wanted to let you know i shared your 30 day prayer for psu with my church at New Beginnings, Pastor Dan Fox. We prayed the prayer you sent yesterday. I will continue to come into agreement with the people praying for this time.

  33. I’m praying for all at PSU and the family of the victims.

  34. I am a parent of 2 wonderful PSU students and believe that God can and will turn this horrible event into something good and meaningful for all those that LOVE PSU

  35. My son and his fiancee are seniors at PSU in State College. This has been devastating on so many levels. Look forward to sharing.

  36. glad biblical way is appearing..confession, repentance, change

  37. Thanks for today’s devotional. We need to hear this, and obey.

  38. Reminds me of Jesus drawing in the sand as the others are about to stone the adulterous woman.  I know I’ve played the part of every person – except Jesus in that story.  I think it is important to know we have all played the part of the condemning crowd…we have all played the part of the know-it-all/rule driven scribe…and we have all played the part of the adulteress when we forsake Christ in any way shape or form.  Yet, he tells us, just as he told her, “go and sin no more.”

This command requires true repentance, and not just a “I’m sorry because I got caught” attitude.  It can be a tough, painful, and humbling experience when we come to Christ with our sins.  Naked and exposed for who we really are in this life.  Sin’s hold can be so strong, but with God all things are conquered.  God is stronger than me, and he is so much stronger than the sin in my life.

The glory of God cannot shine through a dirty window.  May he wipe away the smudges from my window so that the Father’s glory can shine through me.  I so want to be part of the light set up on a hill.

  39. My heart goes out to the boys, now men, who were taken advantage of.

  40. I agree with you that God is saying important things to us. The ultimate salvation is from Him. If we can hear praying sound across Penn State campus from now on, I believe God will make Penn State an even better lion.

  41. The 40 days of Prayer are not only good for the Penn State tragedy but to help our country get to revival for Od.. lets broaden our scope.. thanks so much…

  42. With God in charge all will be made well.

  43. Thank you so much for taking a positive stand at such a time in the University’s life as well as the life of our country.

  44. The call for sexual purity sounds easier than it is.. As a Christian community we do not realize how influenced we are by common culture in our lives. GOd has been dealing with me for several years with an area in my sex life that He did not find pleasing.. I have struggled with it.. but Now I know why it is so important to Him.. how can we judge if we are doing the same things as the world.. He will not effectually hear our prayers and turn this country around until we the Church get our act together.. thank you for your ministry!!!

  45. ..good good stuff … God-inspired … these are topics we’ve been praying about for some time at the SC house of prayer … Friday nights 7 to 9 at Unity Church of Jesus Christ, Gill Street …. thanks for your service

  46. I want to joint your group of prayers for PSU. I totally agree with what you believe God is saying to Lion Country. I appreciate your insight to this event and your faith to Him! I believe God is gathering His lambs more closer together to Him through this event.

  47. Arise church Arise! You were created for such a time as this…

  48. Grace, grace, grace…The Gospel is God’s so loving us and so we believe, and recieve adoptin, and as dearly loved children, we cling in rest to our heavenly Father, leaning on our Savior we ask for grace that eyes will see and heaar the word of Salvation, life, peace, wholeness, rest. Send out laborers and come LORD Amen

  49. I just wish to pass on potential Christian resources for folks. I have listened to a man named Louis Giglio who has done some presentations called the Passion Series. deals with sexuality. also a man name of Lou Engle who has been rallying young folks to run after God in their lives and recently held The Call Detroit. and then for more serious helps there are two ministries that I have heard of-one is John Paul Jackson’s ministry, Streams. and the other is The Elijah House ministry out here in Washington. John Sandford who wrote Transformation of the Inner Man founded The Elijah House ministry. I know some about that work as have attended some of their class formats. I know of Streams only by word of mouth from some friends who have participated in that format and found God to meet with them there. The Passion series is marvelous for young people.

we owe these young people such an appology as prayer was denied them being taken out of the schools. and God was denied to them when the Ten Commandments were taken from the walls of the school rooms. and killing the generations became the rule so that death is chosen instead of life. but how can one choose LIFE if one does not know what is what. that is why I so like the Passion Series by Louis Giglio.

  50. Thanks for directing this important prayer initiative.

  51. I pray that genuine repentance would characterize our response to sin and that the Lordship of Jesus Christ would rule our lives (2 Cor 7:9-10, Mt 7:21 REVIVAL COMING!

  66. thank you for this ministry.we can trust in the LORD and lean not unto our own understanding!

  67. I was really struck by Day 6 in 40 Days of Prayer for PSU. At first I was thinking how awful it was that someone would be so “gross” to leave excrement in the church offering basket. But then I realized, like David did with Nathan, that these people are really me anytime I sin against God in any way. All too often I can put my sin in a “not so bad” area as I focus on others and see what they are doing that seems so much worse. But that is the worst form of hypocrisy and one of the seven things God hates in Proverbs 6:16-19:

16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
    17 haughty eyes,
    a lying tongue,
    hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

May I be first to turn to You with an open and contrite heart, O Lord, and ask that You examine my heart, and then repent of all that You show me that is not of You. Amen!
Thank you so much, Chris, for these 40 Days of Prayer for PSU. I am not a member or part of the PSU community, but I am praying for healing there and in the lives of my loved ones as I pray these 40 days and seek to go deeper with the Lord. May God richly bless you!

  68. “Take the plank out of your own eye.” This was the best advice I ever received in regard to my own marriage difficulties. Oh, how I used to look at the sliver in my husband’s eye and twist my head around in an attempt to avoid looking at the plank in my own. Then I read a devotional article that advised me to keep my mouth shut regardless of his flaws and focus on my own; for it is only me that I can do anything about, and when I focus on me, God gets involved. In regard to my husband and others, the best thing I can do for them is encourage and praise them for who they are in Christ, because we all get it wrong and we all need kudos to help us come up a little higher. Hearing that we are cherished helps us to do so much better than hearing that we came up short again.

Thank you, Chris, for reminding me of what helped me to move forward in my life and marriage more than anything else. God bless you today and always.

  69. Thanks for doing something positive!

  70. May God move in a mighty and fair way to resolve this turn of sad events.

  71. Watch God can bring good out of what the enemy has done.

  72. Pierce the Darkness November 25, 2011 at 9:30 am

Prayer moves the hand of God! And the mountains need moving on behalf of this world turning from God, it’s a light shining on the hidden sins long thought forgotten. Turn and repent, confessing to a forgiving God. Change will follow….

  73. I am so sorry that something like this had to happen. We truly are wrestling against powers in the heavenly realm.

  74. Thank you for calling us all to pray. God has the answers.

  75. Still praying.. hope after all this is said and done and that may be a couple of years.. we can hear some great testimonies of how God was working in the midst of this horrendous storm . Blessings on you.

  76. GOD WILL DO SOMETHING GREAT ABOUT THIS. THANKS FOR SENDING US THIS TO JOIN.

  77. If we have learned nothing else from this horrific ordeal it must be that WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO COME FORTH WHEN APPROACHED BY A PREDATOR!!! AMEN!

  78. Prayer is one of our most effective and powerful offensive weapons we are called to use as believers! SO LET US PRAY WITHOUT CEASING!

  79. We will be praying from the Spencer, Iowa Dream Center’s prayer room!

  80. My prayers are for the victims as well as those who have caused the pain. The adults who didn’t act like adults to protect those young lives. Now is a time of forgiveness and rebuilding… A new generation. We are… PENN STATE God Bless

  81. Let the light of the Risen Savior shine on all of you!

  82. thank you for your evangelism! what a massive Christian wave of truth and prayer!!!

  83. This is a quick note to thank you for doing this.

And I want to respond to your questions in today’s email: why do we blame God? We are taught that God is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and all the other omnis, including omni-good and omni-benevolent. So, if those qualities are His, completely and exclusively, then the logical conclusion is that he has complete authority and responsibility for EVERYTHING that has happened, is happening and will happen. The presence of evil and the omni-ness of God is one of the struggles of the Christian faith.

  84. This is a powerful devotional, and I am so grateful for your words of wisdom, Chris. I do not want to cover one iota of sin in my life, but rather, I pray that the Holy Spirit bring it all into the glorious Light of Christ that He may shine His Light into that darkness. For truly, He is my Hope! I cannot overcome in my own strength; no, I am powerless, and will continue to repeat the same sin over and over again. But I have all the power I need at the foot of the Cross in Christ Jesus, and so I lay my anger, my bitterness, my rage, my hurt, my victim mentality, my lack of forgiveness, my hate, my shame, my fear, my anxiety, my depression, my pride in Jesus’ hands and I ask Him to pour His shed blood over every area of sin in my life, and to reveal to me any area of sin I have missed: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there be any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. [Psal m 139:23-24] For then I am cleansed and free of all my sins, walking loosed in the Light of His glory! For He said, It is FINISHED! And I receive with joy all He has done for me! Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your awesome mercy, grace, and forgiveness in my life! Fill me with the fullness of Your Holy Spirit that no power of sin my enter where You have cleansed the root of sin in my heart! Amen! Alleluia!

  85. I want to tell you that I didn’t start the 40 days until today.  This morning has been an incredible morning of mercy intercession.  I know that I’ve been avoiding intercession and even reading days 1 and 2.  I realize that deep in my heart I knew that I’d be crying out for these people and I didn’t want to go there.  So many old wounds come up from all this abuse stuff and I didn’t want to hurt more so I avoided.  But God said that today is the day to pray all three days.

So, this morning I cried out to God using your devotionals.  The story on Day 1 about the man with the broken heart is incredible.  It ministered to me and I know it ministered to others.  I pray that everyone will tell God just how broken they are.  God hates pride and he’s going after it!

  86. Dear Loved Ones,

I have been greatly saddened by the events at Penn State.  When the story broke, my heart also broke because it hit so painfully close to home.  There is a secret sadness that invades the heart of a child who has been sexually abused.  His/her life becomes a lie.  Lies cover-up the abuse.  Lies protect the abuser.  Lies conceal his/her hidden pain and emotions.  Lies are heaped upon lies until the truth becomes barely recognizable.

Truth is abandoned for a life of silent suffering and, as with all lies, what little truth remains is chased away by fear.  The child reasons, “My mom or dad will be so angry with me.  No one could love someone like me.  There must be something wrong with me.  Who would believe me anyway?”

The events at Penn State only affirmed the fears of the abused child.  How could highly educated and well-respected men look the other way? Why didn’t they protect the innocent?  For me the answer is very simple.  Our nation and especially our academic institutions have moved so far away from God.

Institutions like Penn State have begun to worship their own reputation, academic excellence, tradition, legendary coaches, and financially successful football programs.  In doing so they have forsaken God for one of the most basic forms of sin- idolatry.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).”

So no matter how educated a man is or how well- respected he may be, it is impossible for him to serve two masters.  Being so far from God’s truth, is what prevented the truth at Penn State from coming to light sooner.

My heart goes out to the boys who were abused.  May they be healed by God’s amazing grace and love, and may they be comforted by the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.  May the Spirit move within those near and far from them, moving our nation and its families toward God.

May the abused allow God to use their pain and suffering so they may help and comfort others who have also endured such cruelties.  “For what was intended to harm me, God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives (Genesis 50:20).”  Most of all, I am thankful for the way in which God brought healing within my own life.

I am thankful for the gift of photography in my life.  As some of you know my abuser used me for child pronography, but God has allowed me to use a camera to display His goodness and His glory.  I get great joy from sharing His gift with others.  His grace turned tragedy into triumph for me, and I am confident in his power to do so for others too.

In the words of St. Paul, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6).”  We have the opportunity to do exactly that.  If you would like to pray for P.S.U., its staff, its coaches, its students, and the innocent victims.  Please sign up at http://www.PrayPSU.org  .

The only way evil triumphs is when good men do nothing (Edmund Burke).”

    Love,
    Healed

  87. an alumni: I am so happy to see people praying for my school.  It is a great school but needs to clean up it’s act including no co-ed dorms.  Please!

  88. There is no higher calling than this; praying for one another! May the Father of Compassion comfort each of you at this time….look for Him to come

  89. Pray for the moral demise of our country as well .. and to win our children and the next generation back to Christ.. thanks, have been praying for all involved in PSU. Let this be OUR wake up call for revival in this country! NO MORE !!!

  90. Shame on the board of trustees. Because of their rush to fire CoachPaterno, the media focus was not placed upon the victims.

  91. Thank you Jesus!

  92. Thank you so much for starting these prayers. Prayer is always the right direction to the answer and change. Don’t pay attention to the negative remarks. Stay focused on this mission. Thank God for the starting of this prayer. I support this prayer 100 % . It will bring forth change… God Bless you with strength for the journey….

  93. I’d like to see revival in Penn State.

  94. .. I was raised in a dysfunctional alcoholic /pornography ridden family, with much abuse.. BUT OUr God is able.. we are now after many years a loving caring family including my parents.. GOD is Able and can restore even the most broken hearted.. ALL things are possible to those that Believe.. DO NOT give up believing.. but you are so right we the Church of Jesus Christ must remove the plank out of our own eye before we can be effective restoring our communities.. the answer to ALL our woes is the CHurch and Jesus Christ through the Power of HIs Hoy Spirit.. and we all say’ Come Lord Jesus’!!!

  95. may the victims, students, and faculty receive God’s healing and unconditional love.

  96. Hi Chris! It’s awesome what you’re doing and I pray that the momentum will continue.

  97. I realized another ‘victim’ of the Penn State scandal tonight.. I live in a very wonderful close knit Cristian community.. almost all our neighbors go to church and we interingle on a daily basis.. it is a farming community.. tonight My husband mentioned a dear friend of ours who is an elder in our church.. I started to think about what a great guy he is.. and then I thought gee I think he is a great guy but what if he turned out to be ‘one of them’…a predator.. I am 99.97 % he is not I should say 100% but it makes you think if people you think you know , people you trust could be…?? Trust have we ALL lost a sense of Trust

  98. Every facet of life has a set back at one time or the other. This to will pass. With good strong Christian values, support and hard work this will be behind Penn State in a short period of time. The media has so much hype. The bible is the real deal. Read it and apply it to every emotion, every circumstance and every hurdle that comes your way. You can’t loose on this one.

  99. I LOVE YOUR PRAYER POINTS. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN IN APPROX 1997-1998 WE AOG JOINED THE CALVARY FOR THE LIGHTHOUSES OF PRAYERS WHERE WE PRAYED FOR APPROX 10 FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY OR STREETS. I BELIEVE THIS IS PART OF THE ANSWERS TO THOSE PRAYERS AS WE WERE DILIGENT IN PRAYING THAT THE IDOLS OF PSU WOULD BE BROUGHT DOWN.

  100. I recently signed up for the ‘40 Days’. Have been incredibly blessed by your concise revelations and heart. A PSU alumni by marriage – not a coinsidence – I share your leadings. Its strategic to our nation’s cleansing so I’m elated for your truth/repentence/love-based prayer covering initiative. This online prayer network concept keeps resonating and your website and mailings I believe are a standard to follow – (but would mean nothing without anointed content). Understandable now that I see Marketing Director. Thanks! (running out room)and God bless.
